My latest affection – Maurice Ravel: Piano Concerto in G major

What can I say about this beautiful piece of music? I first heard it in February live in Rudolfinum hall here in Prague, but although I recalled the second movement was somewhat interesting, I didn’t fall for it until I found a copy of the concierto in the antique store where I regularly browse classics on vinyl. Since then, it has rested on my player and spun countlessly. Apart from its poignant waltz stride and chord progression, that brings to my mind Blonde Redhead’s songwriting (I know, this compliment may be too grand), it’s the bit that starts at about 4:00 mark that prompts every atom of my body into a dirge and then, precisely two minutes later, the universe as we know it falls apart, everything loses its importance and nothing really matters. Only this does.
